Moldy Walnut Poisoning
Its that time of year again when the weather changes to cooler and wetter. It also means the end of the nut harvest. It is a time of year when veterinarians see moldy nut poisoning. In damp conditions a toxic mold grows on nuts; Generally thought of as moldy walnut poisoning. The disease can also be caused by mold on all nuts and on some dairy products. The main symptom of moldy walnut poisoning is tremoring. The dog will have uncontrolled muscle movement, but unlike a seizure will remain alert. They can hear you and will look at you if called. It is rarely fatal if treated. Treatment includes muscle relaxers until the toxin wears off. Severe cases may need to be hospitalized and have bloodwork to check liver and kidney functions. Prevent this toxin from affecting your dog by picking up all nuts from the dog's yard or kennel. A golf ball shagger works well and saves your back. This may require frequent checks of all dog areas as trees and crows can continue to to drop them. If your dog has tremors of any kind, please call your veterinarian immediately! |
